Do you know what is plugged into which port?

NetPorta goes through your switches and firewalls and builds a map of your network down to individual ports. For every device you see its IP and MAC address, where and when it was connected and when its warranty ends. It runs in your network, only reads from devices and sends nothing to the cloud.

Help your IT person keep track of your network

NetPorta shows them what is plugged in where, keeps an eye on warranties and licences and warns them of a problem before your staff start dealing with it. Less searching, faster fixes and network documentation that nobody has to write by hand.

§ 3 Features

What NetPorta does

Your whole network in one place – without spreadsheets nobody keeps up to date.

  1. 3.1Network map down to portsSwitches, the links between them (LLDP/CDP, from the controller for UniFi), what is on every port, speed, link status and PoE. Port aggregations are drawn as one link; you can save map views.
  2. 3.2Port healthWarns about half duplex, a port that dropped from 1 Gb/s to 10/100 Mb/s (typically a faulty cable), frequent speed changes, CRC errors and incomplete aggregation.
  3. 3.3End devices and historyMAC and IP address, name, vendor, switch and port. The timeline shows when a device connected, disconnected or moved, and you are alerted to new unknown devices.
  4. 3.4InventoryCategory, owner, OS, purchase date and notes. An optional Windows agent reports PC details by itself.
  5. 3.5Servers and Wi-FiServers with several network cards, iDRAC/iLO, FC and SAS connections to disk arrays and tape libraries. Wi-Fi clients on UniFi and Zyxel access points.
  6. 3.6Printers and storage (NAS)Printer status and toner levels. NEW in 1.7.0: QNAP and Synology – disks, RAID, volume usage, temperatures, UPS – with alerts for a failing disk or degraded RAID.
  7. 3.7Warranties and licencesWarranties and licences of devices and software in one place, including FortiGate licences. An e-mail arrives 180, 30 and 7 days ahead and on the day they end.
  8. 3.8Alerts and integrationsOutages of switches, APs and firewalls, a log of all events, syslog to your server, e-mail via Microsoft 365 or SMTP and a ready-made Zabbix template.
  9. 3.9Multiple branchesEvery branch has its own NetPorta; headquarters (Main) sees all of them in one overview. NEW in 1.7.0: a branch without a public IP connects by itself over VPN (IPsec, WireGuard, OpenVPN).
  10. 3.10Accounts and languagesAdministrator / inventory / read-only roles, two-factor authentication (TOTP). Interface in Czech, English, German, Italian and Spanish.

§ 5 What is read automatically and what you add

What is read automatically and what you add

NetPorta finds most information in the devices itself. Some things, however, are not stored anywhere in the network – you add them by hand and NetPorta keeps them.

Read automatically

  • switches, their ports and links
  • devices on ports: MAC and IP address, name, vendor
  • connection history and moves between ports
  • Wi-Fi clients on supported access points
  • printer and storage (NAS) status, FortiGate licences

Added by you

  • location: building, floor, rack
  • clear names and notes, device owners
  • warranties and licences the device does not report
  • unmanaged switches and equipment without SNMP
  • categories where they cannot be detected, and a check of the map layout

To be honest

NetPorta is not perfect. Even though I try, not all information and maps come together automatically – it depends on what the devices provide. It is a tool that makes network documentation much easier, but human input is still needed: a check and additions at the start, then regular reviews and updates of the details you entered by hand.

§ 6 How it works

Only reads. Changes nothing. Sends nothing out.

NetPorta runs as a virtual machine or on a mini PC right in your network.

  1. Install NetPorta

An OVA image for VMware and Proxmox or VHDX for Hyper-V, or on a mini PC. It runs on Debian 13.

  2. Enter read-only credentials

SNMP (v1/v2c/v3), SSH limited to a fixed list of “show” commands, or an API (UniFi, FortiGate). It never changes device configuration.

  3. Your data stays with you

NetPorta sends no data about your network anywhere. Only what you set up goes out (e-mail, syslog, Zabbix), plus the licence check – just the licence key, installation ID, version and an encrypted machine fingerprint, no network data.

  4. Signed updates

A new version is a signed package you upload in Settings. NetPorta rejects unsigned or modified packages; branches download it from Main.

§ 7 Who NetPorta is for

Who NetPorta is for

For networks with 5 to 50 switches per branch.

  • IT companies and network administrators

Do you manage customers' networks as an outsourced service? For each of them you have an up-to-date map and inventory before you even arrive.

  • Smaller companies

You want an overview of your own IT: what is plugged in where, who owns what and what expires when.

  • Companies with branches

Headquarters sees every branch in one overview; the branches update themselves.

§ 8 Licences

Licences

Licences with prepaid updates. When the updates end, NetPorta keeps running with everything it can do – it just gets no new versions.

How NetPorta started

I wrote NetPorta for myself: as a system administrator (the “IT person for everything”) I needed an overview of my customers' networks and devices. I added features step by step, based on what I needed in my own work.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe?

NetPorta only reads from devices (SNMP, SSH with “show” commands only, APIs) and never changes their configuration. It runs in your network and sends network data nowhere – only the licence is verified over the internet.

Which devices does NetPorta support?

Tested on real networks with Fortinet, Zyxel, Cisco, UniFi and Dell PowerConnect. For other vendors it depends on what the device provides over SNMP.

List of supported devices →

Is everything read automatically?

Ports, devices, links, history, Wi-Fi clients and printer and NAS status, yes. Location, owners, warranties and equipment without SNMP are added by hand, and the map needs a check.

What will NetPorta run on?

NetPorta runs on almost anything: a virtual machine with 1 CPU, 1–2 GB of memory and a 10 GB disk is enough (Proxmox, VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, VirtualBox), or an older computer or a mini PC. For the headquarters (Main) with several branches I recommend 2 CPUs and 4 GB of memory.

Recommended hardware →

How is NetPorta updated?

You download the new version as a signed package in the customer area and upload it in Settings. Branches download the update from Main by themselves.

What if I stop paying for updates?

NetPorta keeps running with everything it can do; it just gets no new versions. You can extend updates at any time.

Does NetPorta need the internet?

The licence is verified over the internet (HTTPS to smiratech.cz), at least once every 30 days. For networks without internet access I issue the licence as a file.

How many switches can it handle?

It is designed mainly for networks with 5 to 50 switches per branch. With a full licence the number of devices is limited only by the hardware. Tested with up to 50 switches per branch; it handles more.

My device is not on the list.

Send me the vendor and model. If the device provides the necessary data, I will add support. Write to napady@smiratech.cz – other ideas for improving NetPorta are welcome too.

Can I try NetPorta first?

Yes, in two ways: the live demo right in your browser (demo.smiratech.cz, no installation) and the 30-day free trial for your e-mail (3 devices (at most 1 of them a firewall), 20 inventory items).

Do prices include VAT?

I am not a VAT payer; prices are final.

Where can I find guides?

Short guides – how to read the map, add a switch, handle devices without SNMP and more – are on the Guides page.
